The Perfect Marriage - Hockey & Beer

Though winter is officially upon us, and the general consensus is that people wanna stay inside during the next few months, things are slightly different when being from Minnesota... It's a beautiful thing that an ice rink during the winter months is as common a sight as a baseball diamond during the summer - And I state that with no exaggeration... There's a public outdoor rink for just about every lake in the state - 10,000 for those who don't get out of their bubble too often... Along with hockey, there's yet another joy in life that's best savored cold - BEER!! As just about any hockey player will tell you, hockey and beer are an extremely common union, a belief that reaches much further than the state lines of Minnesota... Probably also helps in explaining why so many hockey players have false teeth somewhere in their dental repertoire... Though it's much more sensible to enjoy a case of relatively cheap beer when playin' some stick on the pond, enjoying a nice craft brew once the skates come off is never a penalized play...

Focal: A Photo & Film Expo

On Friday December 12th, the Locallective Loft made its' space available for "Focal: A Photo & Film Expo" hosted by Modest... The venue was somewhat hidden, as the only indicator that there was a show being held upstairs was a small slab of wood with "Modest Show - Please Shut Door!" written on it... Once inside, the stairwell led immediately to a beautifully painted graffiti piece with the silhouette of the Chicago skyline seemingly "burning" through the upper right corner of it... That led you past a row of stickers, flyers and business cards of those associated with the shows production, all in front of a studio area, where it looked as if pieces were in the process of being completed... After collecting some memorabilia, we did what any respectable art-show-goer does - We hit the bar!!

XII's - 72 Imperial X Christmas Ale

Breckenridge Brewery - 72 Imperial [Small Batch Series - Chocolate Cream Stout] (12oz ---> Lefthand Pint Glass : 7.2 ABV : 11 IBU)

This beer was for some reason singled out at my local store and was the only one available on the shelf… There could be a few reasons as to why, but it seems they're usually placed there after having been available for a while, (over a year) or, what I assumed happened to this beer, one of the 4/6 pack became victim to a break and they had to be sold as individuals… If this happened to be a beer with some age on it, hopefully the 7.2 ABV helped it age gracefully…
The large car graphic wrapping around almost the entire bottle insists the "72 Imperial" is somewhat of a classic vehicle, and a small amount of research uncovered it is exactly that, a Chrysler to be more specific… To add a nice touch to the "72" theme, the '72 Imperial fittingly had a 7.2 liter V-8 engine as well… Also, since it's a chocolate cream stout brewed in Colorado, they chose to use Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory's "dark chocolate" in the brewing recipe…

Video: Grant Skate Park, Chicago - Opening Day

Image borrowed from SkateNoize.com
Skateboarding has always been a staple in my life... Having learned how at a young age, I've come to appreciate and love the simple joy of smooth pavement and wide carves... In the beginning I put many miles on a hand-me-down John Lucero X-2, so longboarding is much more my style these days... Not to say that I don't enjoy rocking out some street lines from time to time, it's just that I've found that my roots have translated to a greater affinity with the longboards... I've always had the luxury of living relatively close to a skatepark, thus I've always been able to acquaint myself with the scene whether on solo missions or through good times spent with friends... That scene has been kind to me, so I do what I can to show it support in any way I can!!
I came across Modest Inc., which is a dope boutique shop in Forest Park, IL when picking up some art supplies one afternoon... I began following them on Instagram and they posted a flyer which promoted the opening of a new skatepark in Grant Park!! I thought it odd that Chicago would be opening a park in the first week of December, but a little research has has lead me to believe it was to allocate funds from a budget back into the city, thus ensuring further funding in the future... With three acres of street park being strewn across downtown Chicago a few hundred yards from the lakeshore, it's no wonder $2.65 million is the tab on the project... So hopefully someones fiscal year was saved with the official opening of this project occurring when it did, even if it'll most likely be covered in snow within a matter of weeks...

Salty & Sweet - Salted Belgian Chocolate Stout

New Belgium Brewing X Perennial Artisan Ales - Lips Of Faith Series: Salted Belgian Chocolate Stout [Stout Brewed With Chocolate] (22oz ---> Left Hand Pint Glass : 9% ABV : 35 IBU)

There are few things in life as satisfying as watching Minnesota hockey and enjoying a finely crafter brew… They're out there, but the list is fairly short… And much the like the fashion world, with the changing of seasons, breweries also begin to release "season specific" styles, and hockey season is a good indicator that winter warmers are soon to be bountiful in any liquor store… With it still being fall, I figured a "Belgian" chocolate stout would be a light introduction before I dove fully into the winter beer mindset… But when the holiday season fully kicks into gear and Grandma makes her sugar cookies with a Hershey kiss on top, they wouldn't be heavenly without the dose of salt she adds to the recipe to balance out the sweetness… Thus, a salty chocolate stout is one I'm in no hurry to pass up!!

Homebrewing At Its Finest - Xocoveza Mocha Stout

As an ode to homebrewing in America, Stone allows the winner of the annual American Homebrewers Association competition to have their recipe brewed and distributed by Stone!! This years winner was Chris Banker with his Xocoveza (sho-co-vay-za) Mocha Stout, a brewers nod to Mexican hot chocolate... Even though Corona, molé, and Patrón are the more "prized" commodities of Mexico, if the opportunity to enjoy some of their hot chocolate - Don't pass it up!! Sidenote: Why is Patrón such a highly sought after tequila in America?? It can't be its high quality, but could it be because of DJ Class?! 'Cause that's the only reason I can think of, but if so, well done Class!! Alright, back to the brew at hand... Chris wasn't the only one included on this collaboration, as Cerveceria Insurgente was also brought into the equation to attest to it's traditional Mexican flavor profiles... Since So-Cal was the source for their ingredients, they took it a step further and used strictly Mostra Coffee products for their coffee elements, as well as ChocoVivo for their cocoa elements!! Though I'm not a native of California, I am half Mexican and am also a homebrewer, and was thus further drawn to getting this bomber after the relationship I felt to it simply after  reading it's back label... I haven't gotten around to brewing a stout, but when I do, hopefully it's as tasty as this beer is sounding to be!!

XII's - Timber Beast X Velvet Merlin

Choosing a 12 ounce brew as opposed to larger bottles is both harder and easier… It's more difficult in the sense that there are fewer niche styles that are offered in the smaller servings, but that also makes it easier because there are fewer to choose from… I've also realized that the smaller serving brews are somewhat telling of the breweries efforts on the whole… It's not always the case, but it seems that if a brewery doesn't offer a decent beer in their "standard" selection, what they brew in small batches will rarely impress...

Solemn Oath Brewery - Undisputed Heavyweight Ticklefight Champions Of The World

A rainy day with an open itinerary is almost a form of divine intervention which beckons one to enjoy indoor activities... While many breweries offer outdoor seating, I have never seen one that is entirely outdoor, thus it makes it pretty safe to assume any brewery one chooses to attend will be able to accommodate on a rainy day... This particular day brought my companion and I to Solemn Oath Brewery in Naperville, Illinois, a desirable destination after thoroughly enjoying their "Kidnapped By Vikings" nearly a year prior... It's somewhat tucked away in an industrial parking lot, but the giant roll up door with their logo is a dead giveaway as to the location...
Upon entering the brewery, it left much to be desired as far as a "welcoming" setting is concerned, as it's again, very industrial in its' look and feel, and lacks homeyness... The bar-top was fairly standard, but the "lounging" area was quite compact and the only table tops offered were overturned barrels... Which was a nice touch, but a few spots to sit would have been a nice option for us patrons... The wall opposite the bar contained the "BFF Blackboard," which hosted a slew of names accompanied by a number... It's purpose was that when you attend the bar without your favorite drinking buddy, you can kindly show them they were dearly missed by buying them a beer for the next time they show up!! Adjacent to both the BFF board and the bar was the brewing room, accommodating many stainless steel fermentors, as well as an oak cask which presumably hid a tasty concoction that's picking up many desirable flavor elements... Once we had completed the short tour that we had helped ourselves to, it was time to indulge in a few cold ones...

Red Grapes X White Beer

Dogfish Head - Red & White [Ale brewed with coriander & orange peel with pinot noir juice added with 11% aged in pinot noir barrels and 89% aged on oak barrel staves] (750ml ---> Dogfish Head Curved Pint Glass : 10% ABV : 35 IBU)

Obviously, I'm a fan of good beer, and I'm also a fan of good wine... So when wine grapes are utilized as an addition to beer, I see the potential for extremely great things!! This particular brew is one I'd been longing to indulge in for quite some time, and after having the exceptional evening at work I had encountered, popping the top of this beauty is much easier and far more rewarding than the scenarios of arson that have continually plagued my thoughts since I clocked out… So to end my rant about my employer, let us move onto this brew calling my name from the fridge… With a fairly aggressive pour, a rocky, two inch, off-white head sat atop an extremely cloudy blood orange hued brew… The head faded moderately quickly and left behind hardly any lacing, but a decent retentive cap decided to linger… On the nose is the immediate presence of pinot noir, as well as a fair amount of soft citrus, and some tamer dark berry traces… Upon tasting, a fair amount of spice was immediately picked up, which could be either the yeast strain or the coriander, but that faded quickly as the mellow citrusy sweetness made it's appearance…

Love Crxmes: Lady Killers

Image borrowed from Penguin
It's hard to decide on a good place to begin when writing on the interactions of men and women… Thus I'll try to keep this strictly discussing the first steps of the natural pursuit of a man after a woman, and the most efficient way to receive a desirable outcome… Since the beginning of man, we have chased females to plant our seeds and leave our legacy via bloodline… With each cultures' ancestry often abiding much of its' lineages to forms of "royalty" and other such hierarchies… Though cultural norms have changed, as well as chivalric standards, one element that hasn't changed is that (most) men want a woman in their life!! I mention "most" men as it'd be naive of me not to recognize that homosexuality is a NATURAL part of our world… I'd assume that in the homosexual scene, whether men or women, the pursuit of a significant other is still part of any single's day-to-day life, and that many of these points stretch across both homo and heterosexual playing fields…
A few years back, discussing women amongst peers, I was introduced to what my friend referred to as "The Man Bible," which turned out to be Neil Strauss' The Game… This revelation that other men had developed somewhat of a "science" to picking up women, was groundbreaking to me, and these men referred to themselves as "Pick-Up Artists" or "PUA's…" When going to buy a copy of that book, it led to me bringing home the sequel/companion book, Rules Of The Game… Diving headfirst into the world of Pick-Up, against the books' own instructions I finished the book that night… "Invigorated" would still be quite an understatement for describing the way I felt after taking in this publication… The next day I hit the scene and tried to be the Casanova that the previous nights' reading had convinced me I was capable of being!! That night, and MANY after, I went out solo, and subsequently went to bed solo…

Yeti Stouts - "I believe..."

Image borrowed from www.knoxbeercrew.com
Anyone who's spent a decent amount of time in the Denver area has more than likely seen Great Divide's sticker with the words "I believe" accompanying a "yeti" like figure floating around somewhere... Any craft beer head in the area has also more than likely tried this somewhat "staple" of a beer... Great Divide is a brewery I never made it to while I was in the area, but I enjoyed their beers, and of course made sure that a Yeti was indeed on the list... In fact, I enjoyed quite a few of those before being exposed to an Oak Aged Yeti, and consuming that was pure delight... This all occurring before I had begun doing any sort of lengthy write-ups, but hindsight tells me it would have been beneficial to have taken the time to simply jot some notes during their consumption... Regardless, Great Divide has continued to do small batches of their Yeti, with each batch brewed a touch differently, as to influence the flavor profile to adjust slightly, all while maintaining the backbone that makes this beer so prolific in CO's craft community...
In this write-up I'll highlight two small batch representations of the Yeti, the "Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti," as well as the "Oatmeal Yeti..." I won't be enjoying them simultaneously, as I believe comparing two tangent brews of the same original could very well overlap each other's flavor profiles, thus making the review less "true..." Not to say I'd never indulge in two similar beers at the same time, but for the sake of the Yeti, I believe it deserves a fresh palate for each brew... So if you're ever looking for a nice winter warmer to enjoy this coming season, and a Yeti is available to you, pour one of those and enjoy one of the better stouts brewed in America!!

Black Magic - Warlock

October is arguably the best month of the year, and no not just because of the Walking Dead beginning once again... It could be the beautiful changing of the leaves, Halloween, the NHL season beginning, or MLB ending, all great attributes indeed, but for craft beer enthusiasts, October typically equates to pumpkin beer!! Just about every brewery out there will undoubtedly release a pumpkin influenced brew of some form during this month, and just about every microbrewery out there will also be depleted of those brews in quick fashion...
Pumpkin beers having never been a favorite of mine, well, pumpkin flavored anything for that matter, but last fall I definitely acquired a taste for them after indulging in quite a few of Upslope and Dry Dock's pumpkin offerings... This years first acquisition is Souther Tier's "Warlock," as it was recommended to me recently, and I just so happened to come across it... I've seen plenty of folks enjoying their "Pumking" on social media, but was unaware they brewed both beers until I saw the Warlock's label... I'd assume the Warlock is believed to be the better of the two offerings, as it's part of the "Blackwater Series..."

XII's - The Perfect Crime X Hop Burn Lo

Most often, I'd assume due to generally higher ABV's and extra brewing costs, small batch brews that brewers decide to bottled for individual sale are bottled in 16oz, 22oz, and 750ml sizes… Not to say specialty brews can't ever come in packs or 12oz containers, it's just more common to see the truly small batch brews sold individually in larger bottles… These things also lead me to assume that any small batches put in smaller containers could often become overlooked by craft drinkers, which is a sad thought… Thus I've decided to post reviews of beers in containers 12oz or less, each month on the 12th… I truly believe it'd be a shame to let any sort of pretension stand in the way of potentially discovering any brews that just so happen to be divided into smaller containers… I will be attending a wedding this upcoming 12th, thus I'm releasing this overview early, but "XII's" will become a regular posting, so please enjoy the read and stay tuned for more!!

Out Cold X Grainstorm: Black Rye IPA

By now, just about everybody recognizes Zach Galifianakis, or for those less familiar with the comedian turned actor/pop-culture icon - The goofy guy from The Hangover Trilogy... And with the changing of the seasons, I reach to my DVD collection and retrieve "Out Cold," EASILY my favorite movie that he's cast in, as well as a topic for debate as my favorite comedy of All-Time!! In 2011 he also played roles in "Bubble Boy," "Corky Romano," as well as "Heartbreakers," whatever the fuck that is... Aside from being a favorite from the collection, it holds a fair amount of nostalgic value as well, as I enjoyed many joyous nights with old hockey pals watching this movie!!
Along with the changing of seasons, the beers get darker and movies such as "Out Cold" help one get mentally prepared for the cool weather in our future... The opposite being true for y'all Southern Hemispherians(?)... But with the cooler weather approaching, winter activities are also on the horizon as well!! I was lucky enough to have once spent a winter south of Denver, and it was a delight having the Rocky Mountains available to ski and snowboard whenever the snow began!! Granted half the time I went, I was trying to keep up with an Olympic rated skier, which forced me to ski outside of my level to keep up, but my snowboarding skills developed at an accelerated rate because of it... Not without a little collateral damage of course, but no bones were officially declared broken, so all's well that ends well...

Hop Kitchen #7 - Hop The Pond

New Belgium - Hop The Pond | Hop Kitchen #7 [Double India Pale Ale] (22oz ---> Dogfish Head Curved Pint Glass : 8% ABV : 80 IBU)

Whilst browsing the bombers, I was in the mood for something fuller and darker, as to welcome the fall... But with my recent affinity for drawing cartoon characters from my childhood, I couldn't pass up this DIPA simply due to the bearded-rabbit-hop-armadillo-pirate on the label!! Shortly after this write-up is completed, I plan on indulging in an art session to "funk out" my own version of this charismatic lil' creature... It's title "Hop The Pond" comes from it's recipe being composed of ingredients from North and South America, Europe and Australia as well!! Not yet having had a chance to travel to anywhere outside of North America, I figured that enjoying a beer composed of ingredients from outside this vicinity was a good start!!

Riot Fest 2014 - Chicago, IL

It's a difficult thing, deciding where to begin when describing the hedonistic debaucheries that occur during the three day epic event that was Chicago's leg of the 10th Anniversary Edition of Riot Fest... A multitude of bands to appease the pallets of many a rocker, carnival rides, an extensive amount of different styles of food, plenty of beer, the occasional zombie, and of course the mini-golf course!! As every Patti Smith fan needs to keep their short game sharp, making sure not miss a sunday afternoon on the city links...
Though there were an excessive amount of great sets to see, I can only recount the highlights from each day... This is mainly a writeup, but  a more extensive photographic diary of event is available, so please check out our Facebook Album and like us there, as well as follow us in Instagram!!
It all began quite sketchy, with the cloudy morning's ominous weather coming to fruition at varying levels throughout the day... Which initially was no big deal, as the rainfall itself never got too horrifically bad, but the consistency paired with the attendance of thousands of treading feet led to extremely muddy and wet conditions on the ground... Once one came to terms that their footwear and any long leg-wear were essentially collateral damage for attending this fantastic event (Aside from the potentially hundreds of dollars spent just to attend,) the joy began to flow heavily all around...

Saison du Buff - Do you even lift, bro?!

Dogfish Head X Stone Brewing X Victory Brewing - Saison du Buff [Ale brewed with parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme] (12oz ---> Dogfish Head Curved Pint Glass : 6.8% ABV)

Always when searching for the next beer to try, I look for some sort of spark, that little something that engages me, and beer brewed with "parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme" did exactly that!! Secondly comes the fact that it's a collaboration brew between three excellent breweries, Stone recently celebrating their 18th Anniversary (Congratulations to them!!) Although, I note Stone's anniversary, I obviously picked up the Dogfish Head release, stating this because each brewery brews the beer with the same recipe and ingredients, but releases them individually... Fittingly, Riot Fest begins tomorrow and there I will get to see the subject of a previous article, Anthony Green, perform with his previous band Saosin; thus I chose to enjoy a saison on the eve of the event…
For anybody who doesn't recognize the significance of "parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme," I'll leave that ambiguously in the air… BUT - For any who do recognize it, just know it was a nostalgic thing for me, as it brought me back to road-tripping with my mother at a young age, so needless to say passing up this beer would feel like I'm dishonoring my mother in a sense!!

Thumbs Up!! "Elder Brett"

Image borrowed from www.letspour.com

Epic Brewing - Exponential Series: Crooked Stave Brewing X Epic "Elder Brett" [Saison-Brett Golden Ale | Malt  Beverage Aged In Wine Barrels] (22oz ---> Dogfish Head Curved Pint Glass : 9.1% ABV)

I'm proud to say that I DEFINITELY overuse the "thumbs up" accompanied by an awkward "forced smile" in my day to day life… So when I saw the graphic of a gentleman in a shirt, tie and bicycle helmet giving that same motion, I had to give it a try… THEN, upon further inspection I realized it's a portrayal of a Mormon, and the (original) brewery is located in Utah - And THAT shit is fuckin' funny… I note that the "original" brewery is from Utah as they somewhat recently expanded into Denver, where Crooked Stave is also located... Now to the beer…

Video: Mike GIANT X EMIT DF

Having first become aware of Mike GIANT's work in the San Francisco graffiti documentary "Piece By Piece," I began following his work more and more... Learning much about this individual from videos of lectures, interviews regarding meditation, and observing his co-founding of Rebel 8 clothing... I began seeing that I related somewhat to what he was saying and the lifestyle he was leading... One can appreciate his minimalist lifestyle, such as him riding a bike virtually everywhere, not even owning an automobile, and his ingestion of only natural foods... Shit, from what I witnessed, he only smokes his certain weed, as he was offered others many times, not accepting any, but still offering his own anytime he decided to spark up...
He painted pretty effortlessly, usually in big sweeping strokes as he laid his grey outline down on the blank black wall in front of the small crowd that had amassed... They then quickly discussed color schemes as he decoded EMIT's unfinished piece, which he had been working on a while before GIANT had stepped outside... He took short breaks to smoke, sign shit, and eat some food, but his piece came right along as he finished up his fill...

The W.I.N.E. X Red Wine

Being introduced to Stevie Crooks' music in the spring of 2010 was a moment that won't soon be forgotten... While indulging in DJ Fresh85's mix during The Freshboxx on The Pulse with Yaya Martinez, he spun the title track off the Villains' release "Diamonds & Guns..." I was immediately drawn to the smooth samples laid over somewhat rugged claps and baps, and after the song ran its' course over the airwaves, Fresh was polite enough to inform me of the artist who had just struck a chord in my mind... I now had homework to do...
Having just acquired a new laptop at that point, my iTunes was in SERIOUS need of music as my previous library "went down with the ship..." I would later come to find that this situation was actually a blessing in disguise... With the idea to keep my new iTunes library fresh, I didn't immediately rip the (mostly) "classics" that filled my previous one... The idea was that it would force me to become more familiar and in touch with what's current and relevant in todays' Hip-Hop scene... After getting home, I downloaded "Diamonds & Guns" and it became the first musical addition to my new laptop... Shockingly (at that time,) a decent amount of time would pass until something else was added, as I would soon become somewhat preoccupied with this tape...

When Pigs Fly: Hog Heaven

   Avery Brewing - Hog Heaven [Dry-Hopped Barleywine-Style Ale] (22oz ---> Stemless wineglass : 9.2% ABV : 104 IBU)

"When pigs fly..." One often hears those words when encountering a challenge, so seeing the graphic of these hogs in their respective heaven, it was an inviting "challenge" from the beer that blankly stared back into my eyes... Challenging me to what, I couldn't precisely depict, but at that point it didn't matter... 'Cause the stars aligned and as I snatched the bottle from the shelf I bold proclaimed, in the immortal words of Barney Stinson - "Challenge, accepted!!"
Poured a beautiful reddish/amber hue with great clarity, sitting beneath a 1.5 inch head composed of mostly large bubbles, and what looked to be nice thick lacing… Without any effort, the aroma of sweet hops had found it's way up my nose as I let the beer rest, while noting it's decent retention - anxiously awaiting to see what else was in store… The smell of sweet hoppyness was EXTREMELY present, while letting hints of grapefruit sneak through… After the first sip, in comparison to other Barleywine Ale's I'd encountered, this one is much subtler than I had anticipated, and not in a bad way at all…

Love Crxmes: Graffiti

Graffiti - A term widely used to describe any type of art displayed on another's property without prior permission; most often an aerosol medium and is usually accompanied by some form of negative social stigma… The writing on the walls was once a way to tell tales and document instances worthy of noting, ultimately for the purpose of recalling and sharing them… Now the tales have turned to advertisements of tangible items that offer even less stimulation or satisfaction than graphics you ingested when you initially saw the ad… Backed by corporate budgets, the financial war zone that is "Ad-Space" is becoming more and more treacherous, as they fine tune their sights via information we gladly give up with our mobile date usage for instance… But, there's static in the wave…

Saosin X Saison

lkjlkjlkj
IT HAPPENED - And many folks couldn't be more pleased, as it was announced earlier this year that Anthony Green is the frontman for Saosin once again!! It may only be for a few select dates, but as the saying goes, "Better than nothing…" Can't recall specifically, but I believe it's been roughly a decade since he has held the reigns during a Saosin performance… It's bigger than just Anthony Green though, it's the dynamic of the entire band on the tracks written with him as the foreman… It's not that Cove Reber isn't an excellent vocalist, but it seemed that after "Translating The Name," they lost some "fluidity" (for lack of a better term) in their music, as their later releases seemed a bit stale… Now, that comparison is in contrast to TTN, not to discredit their later releases as they are still outstanding pieces of work!!
It has already been discussed with Anthony that the band name is not derived from the beer title, but from an Asian proverb which stresses caution… SO - What does a finely crafted saison have to do with Saosin?! Well, they have extremely similar spelling, are perfect for simultaneous enjoyment, and each are currently enjoying a nice lil' comeback this summer!! While both have been around a quick minute, both have also recently somewhat faded into the background as of late, but their resurgence is set to be well received…
